The Fasting Festival Incorporated
started by the revelation of the Holy Spirit in 1970. The founder is
the Lord Jesus Christ. During the Holy Spirit revival in the 60s
and 70s the Holy Spirit directed Apostle Prof. Ademu Idama to take
people out for prayers. This happened after the Apostle received the
Holy Spirit in December 1969.
The Apostle was instructed by the Holy Spirit to organize prayer
retreats for those who had received the Holy Spirit, those wanting to
receive the Holy Spirit, and anybody who wanted to receive the Holy
Spirit to withdraw to a quiet place for prayer and biblical
meditations. During these retreats, people would fast. Until the
Easter of 1974, the fasting retreats were generally for one day only.
Participants who were mostly youths gathered at the Apostle's residence
for prayers on Wednesdays.
During weekends participants would go out on
evangelism moving from city to city, and village to village, preaching
the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, healing the sick, casting
out demons, and the Lord confirming the Word with various signs and
wonders. Participants came from various denominations; they did
not form a denomination of their own. In fact the group had no name; it
was simply identified by its Fasting Retreats. This is how the name:
Fasting Retreat, later changed to "Fasting Festival"
came into being.
During the Easter of 1974, the Holy
Spirit directed that a national fasting retreat should be
organized. This retreat took place at the Government Secondary School,
Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. It attracted nearly eight hundred
participants from all over Nigeria. The Retreat lasted for four (4)
days during which a large number of people repented and were born
again, many were healed of various diseases, demons were cast out of
many people, a large number of people received the Holy Spirit,
speaking in tongues, miracles, signs and wonders of all sorts took
place.From that meeting in 1974 to date, every Christmas and Easter
period, Fasting Retreats would hold. The period of Christmas and Easter
were specifically chosen by the Holy Spirit for the Fasting/Retreats.
In 1976 it was decided that the
Christmas Fasting Retreat should be organized nationally while the
Easter Fasting Retreat should be locally organized. In 1990 the Holy
Spirit revealed to the Apostle that the Christmas Fasting Retreat
should thereafter be called "The Fasting Festival" and
it should last for seven days, starting on the Friday before Christmas
and ending on the Saturday after Christmas. Participants are free to
begin their fasting anytime before this date as they are led by the
Holy Spirit. At all the Fasting Festivals and Fasting
Retreats notable miracles take place, sinners repent and are born
again, the sick are healed, demons are cast out, outstanding
transformation take place in people's lives.
